Namibia is deeply rooted in Africa's ancient cultural history. Like with many other African countries, written records and man-made structures documenting events and activities in the territory before 1800 are extremely scarce. Most of what is known today about human habitation in the area stretching from the Namib Desert on the west coast across central highlands towards the Kalahari further east can mostly only be deducted from heavy weathered artefacts and isolated archaeological sites.

Far lesser clues are provided by the myths and legends of the cultures that survived in this harsh environment.

The origins of Namibia's earliest known inhabitants remain shrouded in mystery but they left us with an awe-inspiring heritage in the form of rock paintings and engravings as well as stone tools, pottery, bones, and specially adapted shelters. They all point to                                               a people of hunter-gatherers who led a nomadic to semi-nomadic life in tune with                                                 seasonal game migrations and plant growth.

Some of the most amazing facts                                                                      concluded from such finds are that those were not San people but life-stock                                                          breeders who kept alternating between summer and winter pastures.                                                                          They obviously found enough water sources along the edges of the                                                                                     Namib Desert to see little reason for venturing further east  into                                                                              the mountainous inlandą. Speculations prevail                                                                                        over the reasons for the decline and eventual  loss of that                                                                                          very first civilisation in the far south-western corner of Africa...                                                                                                    - to be continued
