The majestic sand dunes of the Namib Desert are the most prominent natural features by which Namibia is recognised world-wide. The Namib, after which the country was named, runs along the entire length of Namibia's South Atlantic coastline, in the west of the country.

Together with the game-rich Etosha National Park in the north, the Fish River Canyon in the south, the historic town of Swakopmund on the central Namibian coast in the west, the Kalahari in the east, and the small yet vibrant capital city, Windhoek, in the centre, the dunes and gravel plains of the Namib Desert make up Namibia's most famous and most visited travel destinations.

These sightseeing highlights also form a geographical framework within which the majority of Namibia's diverse cultural experiences, wildlife sanctuaries, historic sites, and natural attractions can be found.
